From Paddock to Petri Dish: Australia’s Role in Phage Innovation
Australia is quietly emerging as a world leader in phage innovation, thanks to a unique combination of world-class research, strong industry partnerships, and a deeply ingrained commitment to sustainable agriculture.
Institutions such as Phage Australia are at the forefront of bacteriophage science, driving advances in isolation, characterisation, and application of phages for both human and animal health.
AgriCureX is proud to be part of this national movement. From our base at the Sydney Knowledge Hub at the University of Sydney, we work at the intersection of microbiology, biotechnology, and veterinary science. Our goal is to create precision bacteriophage therapeutics that reduce antibiotic use while improving the productivity and welfare of livestock across feedlots, dairies, and mixed farms.
This work is supported by collaborations with Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and other research networks focused on antimicrobial stewardship and biosecurity. Together, these partnerships are building the foundations of a local biomanufacturing ecosystem capable of producing safe, scalable, and high-quality phage products for real-world deployment.
With its robust regulatory environment and reputation for clean, green production, Australia is uniquely positioned to lead the global transition toward sustainable livestock management. Through investment in science and innovation, the nation can not only protect its own herds and flocks but also export world-class animal health solutions to the rest of the world.
