Phages: nature’s bacteria hunters

What are bacteriophages?
Bacteriophages or phages, are viruses that only infect bacteria. They are found everywhere in nature and are already part of the normal microbial world in soil, water and animals. Because each type of phage usually targets a narrow set of bacteria, they can be used as “precision tools” alongside or instead of broad‑spectrum antibiotics, helping to spare the wider microbiome and reduce AMR pressure.[who]

Phage therapy in animals
Around the world, phage is being explored to help control bacterial infections in livestock, aquaculture and companion animals, including conditions like BRD in cattle and bacterial diseases in farmed fish. These approaches are still emerging, but they offer a promising extra tool for vets and producers who are facing repeat infections or tightening antibiotic rules.[pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih]
